Weekend Improvers Lessons

From time to time throughout the year, the club offers additional lesson sessions at the weekend that are suitable for all members to attend. These provide refreshers on various aspects of the game, both in bidding and also the play of the cards. The date and time of these lessons are advertised here on our website, as and when they are scheduled to be held. Members are also advised by email of any upcoming weekend lessons. The standard club session fee of $7.00 applies. Our director and teacher David Scarborough will be holding the third session of this year's weekend Improver Lessons for 2026 on,

Saturday the 9th of May, starting at 10.00 am. David will be covering the topic of how to best describe your hand after partner opens the bidding with a call of 1 No Trump or 2 No Trump. The focus of this lesson will be on the Stayman convention. Natural suit responses after partner opens 1 No Trump will sometimes result in overbidding to a contract level that will fail. Stayman is an extremely versatile method of investigating whether partner holds a four card major suit, while keeping the bidding at a safe level. Did you know that Stayman can be used even with weak hands (depending on the distribution of your suits), and that some Stayman bidding sequences are required by NZ Bridge to be alerted? David's lesson will teach you everything you didn't know about Stayman, in order to find the best final outcome for the hand. This teaching session is open to all Club members.
